Chapter 12

Asher

“I am absolutely not staying in the main house while I recover!” Ivy’s annoyance flares towards her Dad. “The doctor said it could take upwards of a month or two for my ribs to heal. Are you trying to take away all my freedoms just because of a fucking car accident that wasn’t even my fault?”

“Ivy do you even realize how much help you might need?”

“What help could I possibly need, Dad? I’m only in this stupid wheelchair because it’s hospital protocol. My feet and legs work just fine as does my left arm. I can get around just fine. There’s no reason I can’t just stay in the guest house where I’ve lived for three years now.”

She makes a valid point, but this isn’t my fight. I simply wanted to be at the hospital in case she needed any help before being discharged.

Bryant scoffs. “Don’t be ridiculous. What if you fall? What if you can’t reach something in a cupboard? You’re not supposed to be lifting anything heavy and you’re not supposed to drive for at least two weeks. You’ll need someone to help you with certain things, Ivy. Dishes, laundry, cleaning. Can you brush your teeth left-handed? Wipe your ass with your left hand?”

“Oh, my God, Dad.” She flails her left arm. Her right arm in a sling. “Are you seriously offering to wipe my ass for me like I’m still three years old? I think I can manage, thank you very much.”

“Ivy.” Bryant sighs heavily and rubs his thumb and forefinger against his forehead. “I would feel better if you weren’t alone. Maybe we can all take—”

“Then Asher can stay with me.” She grabs for my hand and turns toward me. “Will you stay with me?”

Caught off guard, my eyes bounce between Ivy and her dad. “Uh, I mean, I can do whatever—”

“You’re seriously going to have your brand-new boyfriend live with you for the next couple months?” Bryant gives me the stink eye as if any of this was my idea.

“What the fuck, Dad?”

“Ivy Lynn,” Savannah starts.

I squeeze Ivy’s hand, feeling the anger thundering through her. I want to be supportive of her, but at the same time, Bryant is my boss. This is a family issue though, and not really one that has to do with me. I get that.

“You know what? I think it’s time I look into moving out entirely.” She narrows her eyes at her father. “Someone doesn’t seem to understand that I’m twenty-fucking-three years old and am not a child anymore.”

Savannah turns to Bryant and smooths her hand down his arm. “Bry, Ivy has a point. And remember when I had my accident, you immediately brought me back to your house instead of my apartment.”

“You couldn’t fucking walk, Sev.”

“Semantics. I know we weren’t necessarily as young as Ivy and Asher are but she’s right. They’re not children and if Asher is willing to help her out, I don’t see what the problem is.”

His jaw ticks a few times before he finally relents.
